Zynq Operating Systems
Now that the various types of OS, and their corresponding uses, have been introduced it would be useful to take a more detailed look at a couple of specific OSs from each category. The aim here is to provide a closer look at a number of OS choices and provide information on specific features that are available; how and where to find them; whether they are open source or commercially available; and the support that is available for each.
As was the case previously, this section will be split into two parts with one detailing a number of available Linux options, while the other will cover RTOS.
Linux
This section introduces a number of embedded Linux OSs and environments which are compatible with Zynq.
Xilinx Zynq-Linux
Zynq-Linux is an open source OS freely available from Xilinx. It is based on the 3.0 Linux kernel from kernel.org and includes a number of additions from Xilinx, such as a BSP and specific device drivers. A list of included device drivers is provided in Table 21.1 [9].
It should be noted that not all drivers are included in the mainline kernel, and can only be found in the Xilinx tree. Those included in the mainline kernel are indicated in Table 21.1. Drivers that are only found in the Xilinx tree may be old, and could be removed at any time.
Support is also provided for SMP, allowing the kernel to use both CPUs, and can also be configured to use a single CPU.
As well as providing access to all source code from the Xilinx repository, prebuilt releases are also available from the Xilinx Getting Started website.

Petalogix® - Petalinux
PetaLinux is provided in the form of a SDK that provides the combination of a fully functional embedded Linux distribution and a development environment which integrates with the Xilinx hardware design flow [10]. PetaLinux provides a complete package that consists of everything required to build, test, develop and deploy embedded Linux systems.
PetaLinux comprises of three constituent parts:
• A fully customisable embedded Linux OS for Xilinx devices.
• Pre-built binary images (which are bootable out-of-the-box).
• PetaLinux SDK
Xillybus - Xillinux
Xillinux is a desktop distribution of Linux that will allow you to run a full graphical desktop environment on the Zedboard; a keyboard and mouse can be attached via the USB On-The-Go port of the Zedboard, while a monitor can be connected to the provided VGA port [7]. As well as providing a full Linux distribution, Xillybus also supply a development kit for interaction between the Linux host and peripherals running on the programmable logic. This is in the form of FIFOs on the logic side, and native Linux file operations on the host side. The Linux distribution, which is based upon the popular desktop distribution of Ubuntu 12.04 Long Term Support (LTS), and the development kit are available for free download from the Xillybus website [7].
RTOS
FreeRTOS is a lightweight real-time OS that is available for a wide range of devices and processor architectures. The core of the FreeRTOS kernel is made up of only 3 C files, making it very simple, and it has a minimal ROM, RAM and processing overhead — in many cases the kernel image size will be between 4 to 9 KB [5]. Xilinx provides an already developed version of the OS which is freely available from the FreeRTOS website [5].
Further Operating Systems
There are a large number of OSs for Zynq which are provided by Xilinx partners — far too many to cover in the context of this book. A list of solutions is provided in Table 21.2. Further details of any of the products listed can be found on the Zync-7000 SoC Ecosystem website [11].
